Young is the administrative centre of Hilltops Shire in southern NSW which also encompasses the towns of Harden-Murrumburrah and and Boorowa and villages including Bribbaree, Frogmore, Jugiong, Koorawatha, Monteagle and Murringo.
The area has an incredible vibe and among the many activities in the towns it is well known for some amazing festivals. Among these are the Lambing Flat Chinese Festival is held in Young in March, Woolfest in Boorowa and a Kite Festival in Harden, both in October followed by the National Cherry Festival in December in Young.
Many sports are played in the area and there are a plethora of grounds to accommodate a great variety of activity. Sports played include cricket, touch football, Little Athletics, croquet, polocrosse and camp drafting, tennis and swimming. Horse racing, rodeo and team penning all take place at the Racecourse.
People looking for education will be spoilt for choice in this Shire. In Young there are pre-schools and child care centres, together with two public, one Catholic and one private primary schools and one state and one Catholic high school. In Harden-Murrumburrah there is a pre-school/long day care centre, one public and one Catholic primary as well as a high school and in Boorowa there is a pre-school, a Catholic primary school and the Central School (K-12). There are public schools in Bribbaree, Jugiong, Koorawatha, Monteagle, Murringo and Wombat.
The three major centres in the Shire all have a hospital providing the full range of services. Medical centres in Young, Harden and Boorowa provide GP and allied health services. There are nursing homes in all three centres.
