Gwydir Shire Council was formed by the amalgamation of Bingara and Yallaroi Shire Councils on the 17th of March 2004, and is located in North West New South Wales within the North West Slopes and Plains region, with undulating hills which flatten towards the west and the beautiful Gwydir River is a prominent feature.
The Shire starts at the Nandewar Range north of Bells Mountain and continues north almost to the Queensland border, while to the east it is bounded by Inverell, Guyra and Uralla Shires, to the west by Moree Plains and Narrabri Shires and to the south by the Tamworth Regional area.
The Shire covers an area of 9,121.70 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 5,790 people.
The centres of population are at Warialda, Bingara, Warialda Rail, Gravesend, North Star, Croppa Creek, Coolatai and Upper Horton.
Both Warialda and Bingara have Hospitals, Aged Care Hostels, Medical Centres, Caravan Parks, Swimming Pools, Pre-schools , Libraries, Tourist Information Centres, and a Mobile Pre-school based at North Star.
Warialda is the centre for the Council's Technical Services functions.
Bingara is the centre for the Administrative functions.
The two centres are being linked through the use of sophisticated communications equipment to ensure that the amalgamations primary objective is achieved which is to save the existing employment numbers within each of the main urban centres of Warialda and Bingara.
