About Wentworth Shire Council

Wentworth Shire Council is located at the junction of the Darling and Murray Rivers in the far south west of the State on the Victorian and South Australian borders.   There are a number of townships including Wentworth (the oldest settlement on the region),  Buronga, Dareton, Gol Gol and Pooncarie.

There is much to do in this unique region. Visit historic Wentworth and explore the town or go to the first semi arid botanic gardens in Buronga or take a river cruise on one of the paddle boats in the area.  Some of the annual events are the National Trust Heritage festival in April, the Henley on Darling Rowing Regatta every Easter Sunday, the Pooncarie Field Day in May, the Rock’n’Roll Festival in August or Jazz and Wine Festival during October-November.

With so much water running through this Shire, it is natural that water plays a big part in recreation activities. Some of the Clubs using the rivers are angling clubs and several rowing clubs.   On land, other sports that are played include bowls, cricket, cycling, football, golf, hockey, lawn bowls, mountain biking, netball, polo, swimming, tennis, triathlon and water skiing.  There are also pistol and rifle clubs and racing clubs.

There are pre-schools located in Wentworth, Alcheringa/Gol Gol, Dareton and Buronga.  There are primary schools in Buronga, Dareton, Gol Gol, Pomona, Palinyewah and Wentworth and a high school in Dareton. A campus of TAFE Riverina is located in Dareton.

Wentworth has a small rural hospital that provides 24 hour limited emergency service with a range of primary and community health services.  There are medical centres and pharmacies located in Wentworth, Dareton and Buronga.  Access to a large 165 bed hospital is available in Mildura.
