Grenfell (Weddin Shire) facts

About Weddin Shire

Grenfell is the main town and administrative centre of the Weddin Shire which is in the heart of the Central West of New South Wales.  Villages in the Shire include Caragabal, Greenthorpe and Quandialla. It is situated almost in the centre of NSW.

The area is rich in attractions and things to do.  Henry Lawson was born in Greenethorpe in 1867. This is celebrated at the Henry Lawson Festival of Arts in June each year and the Caragabal Sheep Races are on in September. Ben Hall, one of Australia’s best known bushrangers, spent most of his career in the area.  The cave reputed to be his hideout has been preserved by the National Parks Service and can be viewed via a short walk.

Sport is important in Grenfell and there are many choices of sports including cricket, indoor and outdoor bowls, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, karate, little athletics, netball, squash, swimming and tennis. There is also a gun club, rifle club and a pony club.

In the education sphere there is a pre-school and long day care centre in Grenfell as well as one public and one Catholic public school and a high school. There are also public schools in Caragabal and Quandialla. There is a campus of TAFE Western in Grenfell.

For those in need of medical services in Grenfell will find GP services, a pharmacy and pathology services. There is a hospital and a multipurpose health service.  The Community Health Centre provides services such as dietician, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, psychologist and more. There is a health centre in Quandialla.  Nursing home beds are available at the multi purpose centre.
