Being the centre of a huge agricultural region, the major employer is in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sphere. The other major employers are health care and social assistance, education and training, public administration and safety, retail and accommodation and food services.
Coonabarabran is the largest town and the administrative centre of the Shire. Smaller towns include Dunedoo, Coolah, Baradine and Binnaway as well as many other smaller towns and villages. The area offers unspoilt beauty and the ability to experience amazing scenery and friendly people.
Among the attractions is Australia’s largest optical astronomy research facility, Siding Springs Observatory where telescopes are available to admire the stunning starry skies. Coonabarabran is the gateway to the Warrumbungle National Park, an area popular for bushwalkers and campers. Coolac Tops National Park is the home of giant grass trees and rare birds and wildlife are plentiful in the Pilliga Forest. Among the events in the area are Bush Poetry Festival and the Easter Bunny Bazaar.
Many opportunities exist for sport lovers in the Shire. Among the sports offered are AFL, basketball, boxing, cricket, equestrian, hockey, little athletics, martial arts, netball, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, softball, squash, swimming and touch football.
Educational facilities are excellent throughout the Shire. In Coonabarabran there is one public, one Catholic and one public high school. In Baradine, Coolah and Dunedoo there is a Catholic primary school and a Central School. In Binnaway and Mendooran there is a Central (K-12) school and a primary school in Gwabegar. Both Coonabarabran and Dunedoo have a campus of the Western Division of TAFE.
The area is well serviced with hospitals in the three largest centres. There is a GP medical practice in Coonabarabran together with a number of other allied health services available in town. Both Dunedoo and Coolah also have GP services available. Nursing home facilities are available.
