About Walcha

Walcha is the main centre of the Shire with the villages and settlements of Walcha Road, Niangala, Nowendoc, Woolbrook, Brackendale, Yarrowitch and Tia.

Walcha is the gateway to amazing natural wonders in the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park where opportunities for bush walking, camping and picnicking. It is also well known as a haven for artists and the streetscape has been transformed by the Open Air Gallery of Sculptures. Among the many events on in the town are the Golden Gate Rodeo in January, the Walcha Mountain Festival in October and the bi-ennial Garden Festival.

Sport is well served in Walcha with the following being some of the sports available. They are tennis, soccer, bowls, golf, snooker, hockey, swimming, rugby league, rugby union, squash, camp draft, polocrosse, cricket and darts.

The area is well served in the education sphere with a pre-school, Central school (K-12) and a Catholic primary school in Walcha. There are also primary schools in Niangala, Nowendoc, Woolbrook and Yarrowitch.

Walcha is served by a GP clinic, pharmacy and physiotherapy practice. Co-located with the hospital is a Community Centre where services such as podiatry are available. A well serviced aged care hostel is located in the town.
