There are a number of towns and villages in the Shire. Scone is the largest town and administrative hub of the Shire which also incorporates other centres some of which are Aberdeen, Merriwa, Murrurundi, Wingen and Cassilis.
The thoroughbred horse industry decided to call Scone home many years ago and the Shire eventually became known as the Horse Capital of Australia. There are many wonderful events celebrating horses and other iconic festivals such as Murrurundi’s King of the Ranges in February, the Scone & Upper Hunter Horse Festival and the St Heliers Heavy Horse Field days in May, the Festival of the Fleeces in Merriwa in June and the Aberdeen Highland Games in July.
Sport and recreation are important in the region and facilities are available for many sports including archery, baseball, basketball, lawn bowls, cricket, golf, hockey, netball, rugby league, rugby union, touch football, soccer, tennis, squash and swimming.
Scone boasts numerous choices when it comes to education. It has an early learning centre, pre-school, and before and after school care. There is one public and one Catholic primary school and a public high school. Also in Scone is a private school catering from K-12. Aberdeen boasts a pre-school, primary school and a Catholic high school and Merriwa has a pre-school, Catholic primary school and a Central (K-12) School while Murrurundi has a pre-school and primary school.
Scone has a hospital together with numerous doctors and dentist. Allied health services include physiotherapy, podiatry optometry, chiropractic and remedial massage. In Merriwa, a Multi Purpose Service provides hospital services, doctors and a number of services for families. There is a hospital and GP in Murrurundi. There are nursing homes in Scone, Murrurundi and Merriwa.
