The inland town of Murwillumbah is the administrative centre of the Shire. The Shire is located on the coastal border with Queensland and there are many towns and villages peppered along the coast and hinterland. Among those are Tweed Heads, Banora Point, Bilambil, Kingscliff, Chinderah, Pottsville, Tumbulgum, Cudgen and Burringbar.
The area is alive with activities and some of the many festivals are the Festival of Performing Arts in June/July, the Tweed Valley Banana Festival in August, the Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music in September, the Tweed River Festival in October and the Tweed Foodie Festival in December.
Across the Shire, with such a large coastline, there are many water sports which are played. When on solid ground many sports can be played including AFL, athletics, baseball, basketball, cricket, croquet, equestrian, hockey, netball, rowing, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, softball, tennis and touch football.
Education is well covered with many playgroups, pre-schools and long day care centres . The Shire has 25 public, 5 Catholic, and 4 private primary schools. It also has 5 public, 3 Catholic and 5 private high schools. There are TAFE North campuses at Kingscliff and Murwillumbah.
The region is well serviced with many GP medical services. Also available are allied health services with practitioners such as physiotherapists, dentists, nutritionists, speech pathologists, podiatrists and optometrists. Tweed Hospital is a large rural referral hospital which provides a wide range of health care to this large area. Services include a 24 hour per day emergency department, intensive care unit, medical and surgical and cancer care wards. There is a Community Health Department located quite close to the hospital. There are numerous aged care services scattered throughout the region.
