Singleton is the main town and administrative centre of the Local Government area. Other towns and villages are Broke, Warkworth, Jerrys Plains, Belford, Camberwell and Branxton. The Council is in the heart of the wine and mining area of the Hunter Valley
The biennial Hunter Coal Festival to showcase the co-existence between the people and industries in the Hunter is held in April. This is an initiative of Muswellbrook and Singleton Councils. Singleton has one public and one Catholic primary school, one Catholic and one Christian school (both K-12) and one public high school. There is one public and one Catholic primary school in Branxton and primary schools in Milbrodale, Mt Pleasant, Broke, Jerrys Plains and Kirkton. There is a campus of Hunter Institute TAFE and it is also home to the Singleton Community College.
Singleton Hospital carries the full range of services including 24 hour emergency services, surgery, day surgery, obstetrics, renal dialysis and acute and chronic medicine. There are plenty of doctors, dentists and pharmacies. Allied health services include dietetics, physiotherapy, psychology, speech pathology, occupational therapy and pathology and imaging. Singleton is well serviced when it comes to nursing homes, with many choices available.
