About Port Macquarie-Hastings Council area

This picturesque area is located on the mid north coast and the city of Port Macquarie is the major centre and administrative hub of the area.  Other towns and villages include Wauchope, Wingham, Lake Cathie, Bonny Hills and Laurieton.  

Some of the multitude of events in the area are the Wauchope Lasiandra Festival in March, Port Macquarie Heritage Festival and the Slice of Haven Festival both in May, the Timbertown Annual Steam Fair in July, the Coastal Country Music Festival in August, the Blues and Barbecue Festival in September and the Beechwood Billycart Festival in October and Festival of the Sun held in December. 

There are many sports played in the area including AFL, basketball, cricket, futsal, hockey, life saving, little athletics, netball, oz tag, roller derby, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, softball, T-ball, tennis touch football, and volleyball.

Education is well covered in the Port Macquarie area with many playgroups, pre-schools, long day care centres as well as family day care and after school centres. Port Macquarie has four public, three Catholic and three private primary schools. At the high school level there are two public, two Catholic and two private high school together with a catholic college. In Wauchope there are two public and one Catholic primary schools and a high school and in Laurieton there is one public and one Catholic primary school. There are primary schools in Beechwood, Comboyne, Herons Creek, Kendall, Long Flat, North Haven, Rollands Plains Upper and Telegraph Point. Higher Education comes in the form of a branch of both Charles Sturt and the University of Newcastle and a campus of the North Coast Institute of TAFE.

Port Macquarie is a major centre for medical, dental and hospital facilities, servicing a population of 80,000 people. The Base Hospital is an acute hospital offering a wide variety of services. There is also a well known private hospital and a day surgery clinic plus all the usual and allied health services available in a large city.
