There is so much to do in this region renowned for fresh produce and acclaimed wines along with many activities in the area. Some events are the John O’Brien Bush Poetry Festival in March, the Australia National Camellia Show in August and the Barellan Old Days Weekend in October.
Narrandera facilities ensure a healthy and active life in the town. Sports covered include netball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer and hockey. Other facilities include tennis courts, golf course and bowling greens. Water plays a big part of the recreation of the town. At the swimming complex, there are pools, slides and facilities for picnics and BBQs. Lake Talbot caters for those who enjoy water skiing, fishing and canoeing and the Murrumbidgee River also provides many opportunities for boating, fishing etc.
Education in the Shire is available via child care, pre-schools and out of school care. There is one public and one Catholic primary school and a high school. The village of Barellan is served by a Central School (K-12) and there is a public school in Bunya. Students can board on a weekly basis at St Francis de Sales College in Leeton. Narrandera has a campus of the Riverina TAFE.
The town is served by a 34 bed hospital providing emergency, medical, surgical and maternity and paediatric care. There is also a GP clinic, dental centre, chemists, optometrists and a podiatrist. The Community Health Service provides services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapist, speech pathologist, dietitian etc. There are a number of aged care facilities in the Shire.
