About Muswellbrook Shire

Muswellbrook is a thriving centre and the administrative hub of the Shire in the northern Hunter Valley. There are numerous towns and villages in the Shire some of which are Denman, Jerry’s Plains, Wyong, Martindale and Sandy Hollow.

There is so much to do in this busy wine and food growing area. Some of the standout events are the Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair in Denman in May, the Blue Heeler Film Festival in September and a food, drink and music event in Muswellbrook called Bottoms Up in October.

Muswellbrook has a wonderful sporting complex where swimming and volleyball are available. Other sports which can be played in Muswellbrook are aerobics, AFL, badminton, basketball, BMX, cricket, croquet, golf, netball, oz-tag, rugby league, soccer, squash, tae kwon do and tennis. There is also a velodrome and a skate park. In Denman facilities are available to play athletics, cricket, golf, rugby league, swimming and tennis. There is also a pony club and an indoor sports stadium.

Education is well covered with pre-schools, long day care centres as well as family day care and after school care. Muswellbrook has two public, one Catholic and one Christian primary school and a public high school. Denman has a public and a Catholic primary school and there are primary schools in Martindale and Sandy Hollow. There is also a campus of the Hunter Institute TAFE.

As one would expect, there are excellent medical facilities in the Shire. In both Muswellbrook and Denman there are medical centres. Muswellbrook also boasts dental surgeries, physiotherapy, chiropractic, occupational therapy, podiatry etc. There is a small hospital in Denman and Muswellbrook has a 42 bed district hospital offering 24 hour emergency service, acute medical, anaesthetics, surgical and obstetric services. A Community Health Centre offers a range of services to support the hospital and the attached 18 bed nursing home. There is a fully integrated aged facility in Denman.
