About Midwestern Council

Mudgee is the major centre and administrative hub of this vibrant region in the Central West of New South Wales. There are a number of other towns and villages including Gulgong, Kandos, Rylstone and Ilford.

Being in the heart of an exciting wine growing region there are many events centred around wineries including food and wine tastings and farmers markets. Also popular are the hot air ballooning events which take place regularly. Some of the major events in the region are the annual Cooyal Gold Rush Festival in June, the Mudgee Small Farms Field Days in July, the Mudgee Readers Festival in August, the Flavours of Mudgee in September and the Huntington Music Festival (since 1988) in November.

There are a number of facilities available which ensure many sports are able to be played. Some these are AFL, baseball, cricket, golf, hockey, netball rugby league, rugby union, swimming and touch football. There are also opportunities for boating, fishing and triathlons.

Pre-schoolers in Mudgee are well catered for with several pre-school and long day care centres, two public and one catholic primary school and a high school. Gulgong has 2 pre-schools, a childcare centre and has a public and Catholic primary school and also a high school. Rylstone has a pre-school and a primary school. Kandos has a primary and a high school. There are also primary schools in Goolma, Hargraves, Hill End, Ilford, Lue, Ulan, Windeyer and Wollar. Mudgee also has a campus of TAFE.

Mudgee has a district hospital providing a 24 hour emergency department and obstetric unit. In the other major centres there are smaller hospital facilities. In Mudgee, Gulgong, Kandos and Rylstone there are GP medical centres. In Mudgee there are a number of allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, optometrists, nutritionists and massage therapists.
