Lithgow City Council lies nestled on the western fringe of the Blue Mountains area of New South Wales just 140 kilometres from the Sydney Central Business District. Lithgow is the administrative centre of the geographical area with smaller villages and hamlets including Bowenfels, Portland, Wallerawang and Marrangaroo. Lithgow is the closest town to the Zig Zag Railway and borders the Blue Mountains National Park which is the home of the Wollemi Pine.
Among the many events and activities in this vibrant area are the Portland Art Exhibition held every March since 1976, Lithglow, celebrating Lithgow’s industrial past held in May, the Glow Worm Tunnel Training Running Weekend held in August and view the thousands of daffodils which have been planted in parks and gardens in September at Daffodils at Rydal.
Sport and recreation are well catered for with facilities for athletics, cricket, rugby league, swimming, croquet, hockey, netball, martial arts, basketball, soccer, tennis, bowls etc. Lake Lyell provides facilities for fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, sailing, kayaking and using a jet ski.
The area is well served education wise, with numerous playgroups, pre-schools, long day care centres as well as family day care and after school centres. Lithgowhas three public, one Catholic and one private primary school together with one public and one Catholic High School. Portland has a Catholic primary school and a Central School (K-12) and there are primary schools at Capertee, Cullen Bullen, Hampton, Meadow Flat and Wallerawang.
Those wanting a doctor will find several medical centres in the area. There are also several physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, optometrists and other allied health care professionals. There are 46 beds in the modern hospital and on the same campus is a private hospital, a Community Health Centre and an aged care facility.
