Leeton is the administrative centre of the Leeton Shire. The towns in the area are Yanco and Whitton and also the villages of Murrami and Wamoon. Leeton is the birthplace of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Leeton’s design was influenced by the creator of Canberra, Walter Burley Griffin. Water is the keyword in the area. There are several wetlands which play a huge role in ensuring many species of migratory water birds can find a home during the summer months.
Among the many events in the area are the Sunrise Festival in Leeton during Easter, the Falling Leaf Lunch in April, the Vintage Machine Rally in August and the Leeton Country Music Round-Up in November.
Sportspeople are well catered for in Leeton. Some of the many activities available are bowls, tennis, skate boarding, cycling, basketball, netball, volleyball, indoor soccer, hockey and badminton and swimming.
Leeton has a pre-school, child care centre and an early learning centre. Leeton has two public and one Catholic primary schools and primary schools in the towns and villages. There are also three high schools – one public, one Catholic and a boarding only agricultural high school. There is also a K-12 private school and a special school. There is also a campus of Riverina TAFE.
Residents are well looked after when it comes to health. The town is well served by a hospital providing the usual services, a Community Health Centre, Radiology Services, many physiotherapists, podiatrists, dentists and a number of GP medical centres. There are a number of options for aged care facilities.
