The largest employer in the area is in the healthcare and social assistance. This is followed by retail, manufacturing, construction, education and training and public administration.
As the name implies Lake Macquarie City Council is mostly located around Australia’s largest coastal salt water lagoon situated to the west of the City of Newcastle. Some of the suburbs in the lakes area are Belmont, Cardiff, Caves Beach, Gateshead, Speers Point, Swansea and Warners Bay. It also takes in towns and villages including Cooranbong, Edgeworth, Wangi Wangi and Wyee.
The size of the Lake means it is the central point for many festivals and events. Some of the larger annual events are the Lake Mac Festival on Australia Day, Lakefest in February, Lakemac Heritage Festival in March, the Rathmines Catalina Festival in May, the Lake Macquarie Running Festival in August and the Greater Toronto Spring Fair in October.
There are many dozens of sporting facilities in the local government area which enable residents to participate in many sports including AFL, archery, athletics, baseball, bowls, BMX, cricket, croquet, equestrian, little athletics, netball, rugby league, rugby union, skateboarding, soccer, swimming and tennis. Additionally Lake Macquarie provides the perfect aquatic playground for the whole family with every water sport available.
Educational facilities abound throughout this area with playgroups, pre-schools, long day care centres as well as family day care and after school centres. There area has 56 public, 11 Catholic and 10 private primary schools. At the high school level there are eleven public, two Catholic and eight private institutions. There are two campuses of the Hunter Institute of TAFE at Belmont and Glendale.
John Hunter is a major teaching hospital and is the largest hospital north of the Sydney. It receives patients from all over northern NSW and provides the full range of services one would expect to find in a large teaching facility. There are also five private hospitals and a number of clinics in the area. There are also a large number of Specialists to support the hospitals and a large number of GP clinics in the area.
