By far the largest employer in the Kiama region is in the accommodation and food services sector. This is followed by construction, health care and social assistance, retail trade, education and training and professional,scientific and technical services.
The famous blowhole is just one of the many attractions available very close to Sydney on the south coast of NSW. The principal town is Kiama where the local council is situated. Other towns and villages are Gerringong, Jamberoo, Gerroa, Werri Beach and Foxground.
This spectacular area has plenty of natural attractions, however it also boasts a number of signature events and festivals each year. Some of these are the Kiama Sevens in February, the Kiama Jazz and Blues Festivals in March, the KLC Gold Country Music Festival in May, the Kiama Bodyboard King Pro held in August, Folk by the Sea in September and the Kiama Car and Bike Spectacular in November.
There are many sports played in the area. Some of them are AFL, athletics, basketball, bowing, cricket, croquet, cycling, golf, hockey, netball, rugby league, rugby union, skateboarding, soccer, swimming, touch football and volleyballEducation is well catered for with playgroups,pre-schools, long day care centres as well as out of school hours care.
Kiama has four public and one Catholic primary schools and one high school. There is no university or TAFE presence in the Shire due to the close proximity of educational facilities in the Illawarra. Kiama has a Community College.
Kiama has many GP medical practices, allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, dieticians, podiatrist and psychologists. There is an integrated Primary and Community Health Centre in Kiama offering a number of services such as physiotherapy, podiatry and audiology. There is no hospital in Kiama, however there are three public hospitals and four private hospitals in other regions immediately to the north.
