The main employer in the Shire is the health care and social assistance sector followed by retail trade, construction, education and training, public administration and safety and manufacturing.
The town of Kempsey is the largest town and administrative centre of this diverse Shire. On the mid coast of NSW, it runs from the foot of the mountains, in rich alluvial farming country to towns and villages both inland and on the coast. Among the towns in the Shire are South West Rocks, Frederickton, Stuart’s Point, Smithtown and Kundabung.
There are many events in this diverse Shire, some of which are the Crescent Heads Rugby Sevens in February, the Malibu Classic in May, the South West Rocks Running Festival in June now in its 35th year and the Slim Dusty Festival held in October.
This region is rich in the variety of sport and recreation facilities available. The magnificent coastline offers many opportunities for recreation based around the water. In terms of sporting complexes there are four golf courses, swimming pool complexes, tennis and netball courts, soccer, baseball and hockey fields and grounds for rugby union and rugby league. Sporting groups include athletics, clay shooting, fishing, sailing, lawn bowling, archery, surfing, soccer and go kart racing to name a few.
Kempsey has a number of pre-schools, five public, one Catholic and a private primary school. There are also two public and one Catholic high school. There are primary schools in Aldavilla, Bellbrook, Crescent Head, Fredericktown, Gladstone, Smithtown, Millbank, South West Rocks, Stuarts Point and Willawarrin. In Kempsey there is a campus of North Coast TAFE and a vocational college.
There are several GP medical centres in Kempsey. There is a private clinic offering exercise physiology, physiotherapy and personal training. The town has all the resources necessary to provide for all your health needs. Kempsey has an 81 bed hospital with an Emergency Department and full surgical services including ophthalmology, gynaecology, dental and endoscopy procedures. In Kempsey there is a Community Health Service and numerous nursing homes.
