By far the greatest employment sector in the Shire is agriculture, forestry and fishing. This is followed by health care and social assistance, public administration and safety, education and training, retail trade and accommodation and food services.
There are 11 towns and villages in the Greater Hume Shire which is located in the eastern part of the Riverina area of NSW. The largest centres are Holbrook, Culcairn, Henty and Jindera. There are a number of villages including Walla Walla, Brocklesby, Burrumbuttock, Gerogery and Walbundrie. Most of the Shire is situated along the main road between Albury and Wagga Wagga enabling easy access to both major centres
Agriculture plays a large role on most activities in the Shire including the major events. The best known events are the Holbrook Sheep and Wool Fair held in June and the Machinery Field Days held in Henty in September and the Classic Car Club Shown’N’ Shine and Swap Meet in Culcairn.
There are plenty of sporting and recreational activities available in the Shire. There are golf, AFL, netball, tennis and bowling clubs throughout the area together with swimming pools, skate clubs, all forms of water sports, many horse associations and bike and exercise tracks and more.
There are a number of pre-schools, child care centres and Out of School Hours Care centres. In Culcairn there is one public and one Catholic primary school together with a public high school. There is one public and one Lutheran primary school in Henty. In Holbrook there is one public and one Catholic primary school and in Jindera there is one public and one Lutheran primary school together with a Catholic Central (K-12) school. In Walla Walla there is a public primary school and a Lutheran high school. There are public schools at Brocklesby, Burrumbuttock, Gerogery and Walbundrie. Access to TAFE and University is a short drive away in Wagga Wagga or Albury.
The four major towns in the shire are all serviced by GP clinics. The towns of Culcairn, Henty and Holbrook all have a hospital. There are numerous hostels and other aged care facilities across the Shire.
