Mid Coast Council is made up of three geographical areas with their main towns being the Nelson Bay, Taree and Gloucester. Some of the other towns in the area are Buladelah, Forster/Tuncurry, Hawks Nest, Harrington, Myall Lakes, Old Bar, Tea Gardens and Wingham.
There are many events and festivals over the course of a year. Some of them are Tastfest on the Manning in January, the Easter Powerboat Spectacular every Easter in Taree, Envirofair in Taree in June, the Wildside Adventure Race at Hawks Nest on the October long weekend and the Wingham Akoostik Festival in October and the Lakeside Festival in Tuncurry in November.
There are an enviable number of sporting areas in this area. There are large numbers beaches and waterways in the area which can be used for swimming, boating, life saving, water skiing, fishing etc. Some of the sports which can be played are AFL, basketball, cricket, croquet, cycling, equestrian activities, go karting, golf, hockey, netball, rugby league, rugby union, skateboarding, soccer, swimming, tennis and touch football.
In this huge area there are numerous pre-school, family and long day care and out of hours facilities. At the primary level there are almost forty public, five Catholic and four private primary schools. There are two central schools (K-12), four public, one Catholic and four private high schools. There are TAFE campuses in Taree and Great Lakes.
There are many allied health professionals in the area including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, dieticians, speech therapists, psychologists etc throughout area. There are four public and three private hospitals spread across the entire area. There are many aged care facilities including nursing homes, aged care hostels and other facilities.
