Dubbo is the largest centre and administrative hub in the Dubbo Regional Council area. There are a number of towns and villages some of which are Wellington, Wongarbon, Geurie, Yeovil, Eumungerie and Euchareena. Dubbo is perhaps best known as home of the Western Plains Zoo which brings thousands of visitors to the area every year.
There are many events in Dubbo throughout the year including in July the Antique and Collectables Fair, in August the Dubbo Stampede, the Orana Caravan, 4WD, Fish and Boat Show will be held in September and the NSW Aboriginal rugby league knockout is held in October.
Dubbo’s sporting facilities are second to none. Some of the sports which can be played are AFL, athletics, basketball, canoeing, cricket, croquet, cycling, golf, gymnastics, hockey, judo, karate, lawn bowls, netball, rugby league, rugby union, softball, soccer, squash, swimming, taekwondo table tennis and touch football. For horse lovers there are eventing and dressage clubs and pony club and there is a gun club.
Education is well catered for with numerous pre-schools, long day care centres and after school and vacation care. Dubbo has seven public, four Catholic and 2 private primary schools. At the secondary level there are three primary, one Catholic and two private high schools. In the higher education sphere, there is a campus of Charles Sturt University and the School of Rural Health of the University of Sydney. There is also a branch of the Western Institute of TAFE and Western College.
Dubbo is a major centre for medical, dental and hospital facilities, servicing a large population. The Dubbo Base Hospital offers the full range of services including emergency, surgical and maternity and all the services one would expect in a major hospital plus all the usual and allied health services available in a large city. There is also a private and a rehabilitation hospital in the city as well as five aged care centres.
