Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council is in the Riverina area in southern NSW and encompasses the towns of Cootamundra and Gundagai together with a number of villages including Coolac, Nangus, Stockinbingal and Wallendbeen. The Shire has a strong economy built on well established and diversified farming, industry and professional businesses and enterprises.
Known as the birthplace of Donald Bradman, the Council has lovingly restored the building at 89 Adams Street which was a small private hospital and was where Bradman was born. The adjacent cottage is now home to a wonderfully rich display of Bradman and Australian cricket memorabilia. Unique to Cootamundra is the Captains Walk at Jubilee Park which features 42 bronze sculptures of Australian Test Cricket Captains. Gundagai is home to the iconic Dog on the Tuckerbox and Rusconi’s amazing Marble Masterpiece.
Sport is important in both towns. There are many facilities which provide opportunities to play AFL, basketball, bowling, cricket, golf, hockey, netball, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, squash, swimming and tennis.
In Cootamundra there are a variety of early childcare and preschool options, two public, one Catholic and one special needs primary schools and a high school. In Gundagai there is a pre-school, two public and one Catholic primary schools and a high school. There are primary schools at Adjungbilly, Nangus, Stockinbingal and Wallendbeen. There are campuses of Riverina TAFE in Cootamundra and Gundagai.
Cootamundra has a 33 bed hospital and provides acute and community health care services. The hospital provides emergency, surgical, obstetric, paediatric and high dependency care. The Cootamundra Medical Centre has 6 doctors and a range of qualified health professionals together with a day centre for the aged and centres. Gundagai has a newly developed hospital to provide medical care and also an aged care facility. The Gundagai Medical Centre provides the full range of GP services and also visiting specialist and allied health centres
