By far the area of greatest employment in the Shire is accommodation and food services, followed by agriculture, forestry and fishing, retail trade, public administration and safety, health care and social assistance and education and training.
This picturesque part of the State borders Victoria and takes in the high country of NSW. Cooma is the largest town and administrative centre of the Shire which also takes in Jindabyne, Bombala, Berridale, Thredbo and Adaminaby to name a few. The population swells in the snowy winter with places like Thredbo growing from about 400 to 4,000!
There are so many events in this area it is impossible to list them all here. Suffice to say that almost anything is available. Some examples are the Perisher Peak festival celebrating the opening of the ski season, Snowtunes Music Festival, Australias only music festival in the snow, Snowy Mountains Trout Festival which has run since 1975 and the Man from Snowy River Rodeo which has been running since 1943. This is just a tiny sample of the many wonderful things to do in this exciting region.
The obvious recreation in the area are associated with snowskiing, snowboarding, tobogganing and the list goes on. However in addition, there are many opportunities for horse riding and other horse sports, bushwalking and hiking and enjoying a range of water sports such as canoeing, rafting, swimming and water skiing. Additionally sports such as AFL, archery, athletics, basketball, cycling, golf, hockey,netball, rugby league, rugby union, skatebjoarding and tennis are all available.
Education is well covered with playgroups, pre-schools and long day care centres. Cooma has two public and one Catholic primary schools, a Catholic college and a Christian school (both K-10) and a private and a public high school (both K-12). Bombala has one public and one Catholic primary school and a high school, Jindabyne has a Central school (K-12) and there are primary schools in Adaminaby, Berridale, Bombala, Dalgety, Delegate, Jerangle, Michelago and Nimmitabel. Higher Education is available through the Cooma campus of Illawarra TAFE and the Cooma Universities Centre.
There are hospitals in Cooma, Bombala and Delegate and Snowy River Health Centre in Jindabyne and there are 2 nursing homes in the area. In the area there are General Practitioners, health practitioners, nurses and visiting medical specialists. Allied health services available in the area are physiotherapy, pathology, chiropractic, podiatry and more. There are many choices when it comes to aged care facilities.
