The town of Grafton is the administrative centre of a large local government area on the north coast of New South Wales. It takes in many towns and villages including Yamba, Maclean, Iluka and Coutts Crossing. The area covers the mountain range to the west right through to the coast.
There are many festivals and events on in this busy area. The Highland Gathering is held in Maclean in April, the Grafton Truck Show is held every year in June, the Grafton Bridge to Bridge Ski Classic is on in September and Australia’s longest running floral festival, the Jacaranda Festival in Australia is held on the last week in October every year.
The area is well served with sporting facilities which enable residents to play hockey, croquet, tennis, cricket, rugby league, netball, rugby union and soccer. There are also athletics facilities, swimming pools, bowling and golf clubs, BMX and cycling facilities, pony and polocrosse clubs, rowing and sailing clubs, angling club, skateboard parks and equestrian areas.
There are many choices regarding education in the area with eight pre-schools and four long day care centres. There are twenty three public and four Catholic primary schools, three public and one Catholic high school and three private K-12 schools. Both Grafton and Maclean have branches of TAFE North Coast.
The area is well served by medical facilities. There are many GP medical clinics and allied health professionals. The Base Hospital provides all the services expected in a large regional facility which include a 24 emergency department, intensive care, surgical, medical, obstetric, oncology and paediatric wards and many more. There are Community Health Services in Grafton and Maclean and there is a wide choice of nursing homes, hostels and other aged care facilities.
