The largest employer in the Shire is in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector followed by education and training, public administration and safety, health care and social assistance, accommodation and food services and construction.
This massive Shire (about the size of Tasmania) and yet with a tiny population of about 2,000 people is in the far west of New South Wales. It has a number of villages including Wilcannia, Ivanhoe, White Cliffs and Menindee and settlements such as Sunset Strip and Tilpa.
The area has a rich river heritage having been where wool was once shipped for the whole of western NSW and along with a large variety of agricultural pursuits there is the village of White Cliffs where opals are mined. Among the events held in this large area every year are the Ivanhoe Campdraft held in April and in May the White Cliffs Music Festival has been running since 2010.
A variety of sporting facilities enable sports including cricket, football, hockey, basketball, golf, swimming and tennis to be played.
In Wilcannia there is one Catholic primary school and a Central School (K-12). There are also Central Schools (K-12) in Wilcannia, Menindee and Ivanhoe and selected courses in Western NSW TAFE campuses in the three towns.
There is a hospital in Wilcannia and also a pharmacist. There is a medical centres in White Cliffs. In Menindee there is a medical centre and a Home and Community Care office. In Ivanhoe there is a medical centre and a retirement home. The Royal Flying Doctor Service provides mobile health and welfare for local residents.
