Carrathool Shire is situated in the south west of New South Wales. The largest town in the Shire is Hillston, but the administrative offices are in both Hillston and Goolgowi. Other villages include Rankins Springs and Merriwagga.
Among the great things to do in these communities are the Outback triathlon held in March each year in Hillston, the Hook Line and Sinker Fishing Festival in August in Carrathool, the Merriwagga Spring Fair Lunch in September and the Birds of the Bush Festival held in October in Rankins Springs each year.
There are a number of facilities for recreation in the area. Among these are golf courses, skate park, swimming pools, outdoor gym, tennis courts, sports oval and a pony club. The Murrumbidgee River provides opportunities for boating, fishing, water skiing and swimming.
All the towns have pre-school services. Hillston has a Catholic primary school and a Central School (K-12). There are public schools in Carrathool, Goolgowi and Rankins Springs.
