About Byron Shire

Picturesque Byron Bay is the eastern most town on the east coast of Australia and is the administrative centre of the Byron Shire. Other towns and villages are Bungalow, Ocean Shores, Mullumbimby, Myocum, Eureka, Possum Creek and Billignudgel. 

The Shire is renowned for its events.  Some of them are the Boomerang Festival in March, the Old and Gold Festival in June, Splendour in the Grass held in July, the Byron Writers Festival in August, Byron Bay International Film Festival in October and the Mullum Music Festival in November.

When one considers sport and recreation in Byron Bay, the automatic thought is to beaches and water related activities but there is a lot more.  Sports available include AFL, badminton, basketball, bowling, cricket, croquet, futsal, gliding, golf, hang gliding, hockey, life saving, netball, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, surfing, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

Education is well covered with many pre-schools, long day care centres as well as family day care and after school centres.  There are fifteen public, three Catholic and two private primary schools.  There are two public and three private high schools.  At the tertiary level, there are several choices including SAE institute and the Byron Community College.

For those needing medical attention there are a plethora of medical centres in the area. Allied health specialists such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, dieticians, psychologists are all well catered for in the region.  The Byron Central Hospital provides a wide range of acute and sub acute services including a 24 hour emergency and obstetrics department.
