Broken Hill, known as the Silver City, is an isolated council area in the far west of New South Wales surrounded by the Unincorporated Far West region. From a town whose origins were to take advantage of the huge deposits of silver, lead and zinc, the city has now reinvented itself as a prosperous arts and tourist area.
For 6 weeks every April and May, the Heritage Festival: If Only Our Walls Could Talk takes place incorporating tours, presentations and exhibitions. The St Patricks Day Races are a “must do” if visiting in March. Nine kilometres from Broken Hill is the fascinating Living Desert and Sculptures which is an art installation plus a Living Desert Flora and Fauna Sanctuary. The Regional Art Museum features public programs and workshops as well as travelling exhibitions and the Gallery’s own collection.
Every recreational activity you can imagine is on offer in this vibrant city. Some of these are AFL, archery, basketball, boating, bocce, bowling, bushwalking, cricket, cycling, golf, gymnastics, harness racing, hockey, netball, roller skating , softball, swimming, tae kwon do and tennis.
Broken Hill is well served in the education sphere. There are several day care centres and pre-schools, six public and one Catholic primary schools and two high schools together with the Broken Hill School of the Air. There is the Broken Hill campus of TAFE Western and the Robinson Centre, a branch of Charles Sturt University.
For those with health issues, the Broken Hill Base hospital provides all the facilities of a large hospital including a 24 hour emergency department. There is also a Mental Health Recovery Centre, Community Health Centre and there are also several GP medical centres, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrist, osteopath, dietitian and pharmacies
