The largest employer in the Shire is in education and training. This is closely followed by health care and social assistance and public administration and safety. There are a smaller number involved in retail and construction.
Brewarrina is a large Shire situated in north western New South Wales. It hugs the Queensland border and encompasses the administrative centre and largest town of Brewarrina together with the villages of Goodooga, Gongolgon, Weilmoringle and Angledool.
There are many events throughout the year some of which are the Brewarrina Races held in May and the Bre Big Fish held in June. Explore the region by visiting the Narran Lakes, the largest freshwater lake in Australia which is a sanctuary for many different species of birds, enjoy camping and fishing or get into canoeing, waterskiing and boating on the wonderful Barwon/Darling River.
Apart from all the sporting activities available on the local waterways, there are many opportunities to be involved in sporting pursuits in the town. Among the sports available are golf, rugby league, swimming, netball, basketball and tennis.
Students are able to attend the Child, Youth and Family Centre for many activities after school and in the holidays. There are several choices for pre-school/day care services and then from kindergarten, children can attend the Catholic primary school in Brewarrina or Goodooga Central School (both K-12). Another option for Year 7 and 8 aboriginal boys is to attend a boarding school. There is a primary school in Weilmoringle. Brewarrina College has a campus of TAFE Western.
The Brewarrina District Hospital provides accident and emergency services, intensive care, women’s health etc. Co-located with the hospital is a Community Health Centre. In town there is also a medical centre with GP services and a dental service is provided through the Shire and Charles Sturt University.
