About Bourke

Bourke is situated at the crossroads of the Mitchell and Kamilaroi Highways and the Kidman Way. The township of Bourke is located on the banks of the Darling River and boasts a vibrant lifestyle and plenty of opportunities for employment. Other small villages include Byrock, Enngonia, Fords Bridge, Wanaaring and Louth. Traditionally a wool growing area, Bourke was once the biggest wool railhead in the world.

The Back to Bourke Weekend is held every Easter with many activities in which to participate. The Back O’Bourke Exhibition Centre is a huge tourist attraction, together with paddle steamer tours.

There are a number of active sports clubs in Bourke catering for most interests which include cricket, golf, hockey, netball, rugby league, rugby union, soccer, swimming and tennis. There is also a pony club and opportunities for waterskiing and fishing or swimming.

Bourke has a pre-school and day care centre, one public and one Catholic primary school, two K-10 central private schools and one high school. There is also a campus of TAFE in Bourke
