More people work in agriculture, forestry and fishing than any other occupation in the Shire. In order the next most popular employment areas are healthcare and social assistance, accommodation and food services, retail trade, manufacturing and education and training.
The southern border of this council skirts the Murray River and is located to the west of Albury. The administrative centre is based in Berrigan but the towns of Finlay, Tocumwal and Barooga all exceed it in population.
Due to its proximity with Victoria, there are many synergies with the towns on the other side of the border. Two popular events are the Tocumwal Winter Swap Meet Show and Shine in July and the Berrigan show in October. A great initiative for young people is the Local Employment Expo held every year since 2004.
There are numerous recreational and sporting facilities in the area to keep the whole family busy. The Barooga Botanical Gardens is a great venue for quiet enjoyment. In Finley, the lake provides a great venue for fishing, sailing, canoeing and waterskiing. The skate park in Finley provides great fun for youngsters. Throughout the Shire, there are numerous “sandy beaches” providing beautiful settings for all the water based activities imaginable.
The towns of Berrigan and Tocumwal each have a pre school, a public and a Catholic primary school. Barooga has a pre-school and a public school and Finley has a pre-school, a public and a Catholic primary school plus a high school. There is also a campus of Riverina TAFE in Finley.
Berrigan and Tocumwal and Finley each have medical centres with GPs available for general consultation and Berrigan and Tocumwal both have a hospital. There is also a hospital in Finley and a Community Health Centre. There are a number of allied health services available. There are also a number of nursing homes in the area.
