The Shire is quite unusual in that its western border is high on the Dorrigo plateau and it encompasses part of the Great Dividing Range and continues right to the coastline. Bellingen is the administrative centre and largest town and is situated in the heart of the Shire. Almost the same size, the town of Urunga is sited where the beautiful Kalang river flows into the sea. Some of the smaller communities are Dorrigo, Repton and Raleigh.
Among the myriad of activities available in this busy area, there are some standout events. Among these are Camp Creative held in Bellingen each January, the Creative Mountain Arts Exhibition in Dorrigo in March, the Titivators Dragon Boat Club Regatta in May, the Bellingen Readers and Writers Festival in June and the Dorrigo Folk & Bluegrass Festival in October.
In this diverse Shire there are many recreation locations. Uniquely, outdoor fitness centres have been established in Bellingen and Dorrigo in town parks. On the coast, beaches provide many sources of recreation such as boating, fishing, swimming etc. As well there are facilities for basketball, bowls, cricket, croquet, cycling, golf, karate, netball, skateboarding and tennis.
There are pre-schools and day care centres in Bellingen, Urunga and Dorrigo. There is a public primary school in Urunga and in Dorrigo and Bellingen there is one public and one Catholic. There are high schools in Dorrigo and Bellingen. There are also public primary schools in Repton, Raleigh and a Rudolf Steiner school in Thora.
There are hospitals in Bellingen and Dorrigo, medical centres in all three towns, dentists and some allied health practitioners such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
