The major employer in the Shire is the healthcare and social assistance sector, followed by retail trade, accommodation and food services, manufacturing, education and training and agriculture forestry and fishing.
Bega is the largest and the administrative centre of this large Shire which has a very long section of the coastline which extends from Bermagui in the north to skirt the Victorian border in the south. Known as the Sapphire Coast, it has many towns and villages which include Merimbula, Tura Beach, Eden and Tathra.
Among the many great festivals and events held in the Shire is the Merimbula Jazz Festival which was first held in 1979 and continues every June. Also the Bega Valley Motorcycle Expo is held in Bega annually in September.
Obviously with an area with such a long coastline, there is every opportunity to indulge in all water related sports. These include surf life saving, dragon boat racing and water polo. Additionally facilities are provided for AFL, archery, basketball, carpet bowls, cricket, cycling, equestrian, golf, hockey, netball, pony club, rugby league, showjumping, skateboarding, softball, squash, soccer, swimming, tennis and table tennis.
Education is well covered with a number of pre-schools and playgroups and long daycare services throughout the Shire. Bega has one public, one Catholic and two independent primary schools together with one public and one private high school. Eden has both a state primary and high school and Pambula has a public primary and a Catholic high school. There are also public primary schools in Bemboka, Bermagui, Candelo, Cobargo, Merimbula, Quaama, Tanja, Tathra, Towamba, Wolumla and Wyndham. Higher Education is well covered with a branch of Illawarra TAFE in Bega and a campus of the University of Wollongong. There is also a Community Technology Service in Bermagui.
The area is well served with medical centres in Bega, Pambula, Bermagui, Merimbala and Eden. There are public hospitals and Community Health Centres in Bega and Pambula. The area is well served with allied health practitioners including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiologists, podiatrists and dietitions.
