Armidale

As Australia's first mainland fully NBN city with fibre to the premises we truly are a 21st century city which is looking to attract businesses that require ultra high speed broadband.

The city of Armidale is a regional centre servicing a population of over 36,000 within a 50 km range.

With QANTASlink and REX Airlines servicing the city, Armidale has over 7 flights a day to Sydney and normally 5 services on the weekend. As a business base you can fly to Sydney early in the morning and catch a flight home at 7pm to allow you to do a full days business in the city.

With a water supply built for a population of over 75,000 residents the city is indeed fortunate to be at the head of the mighty Clarence system.

As the home to the University of New England, Australia's oldest regional university Armidale is known as the education centre with a diverse choice of pre, primary and secondary schools, along with the TAFE and UNE.

Culturally Armidale is unique for a city of its size with the incredible New England Regional Art Musuem (NERAM) housing a huge collection of art. The city has its own Symphony Orchestra, a very strong preforming arts community and is also the home of the New England Conservatorium of Music.

The major drivers of the economy are retail, health, education and agriculture.

History

First setteled in the 1830s after English settler John Oxley visited the site and named after Armadale on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

Early pioneers set up small farms as the rich soil from an old volcano was good for grazing. Gold was discovered at nearby Rocky River and Gara Gorges which led to the town growing in population rapidly. The gold mining settlement of Hillgrove about 40 km east of Armidale was the site of Australia's first hydro-electric scheme.

Armidale is home to the Anaiwan Aboriginals.
